Sunday, February 12th, marked the end of the 24th annual Model United Nations of the University of Chicago (MUNUC). This year thousands of high school students gathered to recreate the legislative and decision making process of the various branches of the United Nations and other similar intergovernmental bodies.  These simulations have provided opportunities for delegates from diverse backgrounds to cooperate and collaborate in their various committees. This year MUNUC hosted over 2,300 high school students from over 100 schools, 17 states and 7 countries across 4 continents. MUNUC is widely regarded and one of the largest and most prestigious high school conferences in the world.

Warren Central sent a delegation of 29 students, representing India, the Peoples Commissar for Justice for the Soviet Republic and the Minister of Money for the Ethiopian DERG. These 29 students did an outstanding job of representing not only their respective governments but also Warren Central.  Of the 29 students, MUNUC recognized eight Warren Central students for their hard work and oratorical skill. The eight students recognized are Natalie Verhines, Rachel Daugherty, Adrian Wolanski, Hayden Wiesinger, Jenna Stoffel, Jeremiah Mickey, Jacob Bullock and Darby Mulligan. To put this in perspective, Warren Central represented seventeen committees and our school received recognition in 5 of those 17 committees. If there was an award for outstanding school, Warren Central performed well enough to have been awarded this honor.  The students are sponsored by Social Studies teacher Nick Salemi and Amy Moeller.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett honored inspiring Hoosier teachers in a ceremony at the Statehouse on January 11, 2012. Of the seventy-eight teachers recognized, three of them were from Warren Central High School.  Congratulations to Tracey Bush, Jennifer Jensen and Dennis McNulty on this prestigeous honor.

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) asked school principals to nominate inspiring teachers in their buildings. Those teachers were invited to today’s ceremony and are featured on the IDOE Christmas tree in Dr. Bennett’s office.

“The teachers I spoke with today display creativity in their classrooms and are dedicated to every student’s success,” Bennett said. “The best teachers inspire young minds to learn. I saw that today, and I believe there is no profession more noble.”

The Warren Central Athletics Department is pleased to announce the launch of a new school-wide initiative to stop bullying and hazing in the school and among the students. The “Take A Stand” program will commence on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 16, 2012 from noon until 3:00pm.

In addition to hearing from Elliot Hopkins, a national speaker on bullying and hazing issues from the National Federation of High Schools those attending will also hear a firsthand account of the tragic death of a former Warren Central student athlete whose life was claimed as a result of a hazing incident while at college.

Students in attendance will also participant in team-directed breakout sessions to develop a set of procedures and protocols for dealing with bullying and hazing and advancing a positive culture throughout Warren Central and the entire MSD of Warren Township. According to Athletic Director Marques Clayton it is “important that we set our young people up to take, not only the responsibility, but the lead role in establishing a genuine and effective anti-bullying and hazing culture throughout our sports programs and the school at large.” “That’s why this event is both crucial and timely.”

At the conclusion of the session students will be directed to sign an individual Anti-Bullying and Hazing Pledge. A picture will be taken of everyone who signs the pledge and those photos will become part of an ongoing campaign against bullying and hazing.

Although the Athletic Department has stepped up to sponsor the Take A Stand event, students from non-sports organizations, clubs, and groups are encouraged to participate. Teachers, sponsors and advisors are urged to encourage their students to attend this very important event.

On November 9, sixteen Warren Central athletes played a major role in providing an awesome evening of reading fun at Liberty Park Elementary’s Family Literacy Night.  Under the direction of Coach John Hart and his wife Janet, the following football players participated in the ‘We Both Read’ station by inviting LP students to read books with them in the Gym.

Ms. Brenna Michels, Literacy Coach at Liberty Park had this to say about the event:  "It was amazing to watch the players interact with our students who were completely in awe of the ‘big kids.’  But, what was equally fun to witness was the way your student-athletes looked at our ‘little kids’.  I think the experience was magical for everyone involved.  Parents attending our event loved the way the program was represented to their children.  Coach and Janet Hart clearly do a fabulous job with the athletes and player respect for this couple is warmly apparent.  Thank you, so much, for sharing your student-athletes with us for this special event --- our growing readers will remember it always!"

On the heels of the annual food drive Warren Warriors jump right into supplying toys and needed items for children in our township, city, country and world. The annual Children’s Christmas Party sponsored by Student Council takes place on December 7th. Classrooms, clubs and the offices “adopt” one or more of the 100+ children chosen from within our township. Gifts are purchased and presented to the child by Santa at the party on December 7th.  It’s a fun evening for all involved!

Other ways the Warrior Nation is helping this holiday season:

We all know this is the “season of need” for our city and for the world. There are several opportunities to give here at Warren.  Each year, Class Act and Distinguished Gentlemen sponsor Operation Christmas Child. This program provides shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in third world countries. We are collecting toys (new or gently used), toiletries (combs, toothbrushes, tooth paste, lotions), school supplies (crayons, pencils, markers etc.) and candy (individually wrapped). Any gift that will fit in a shoe box will be appreciated. Also, we need standard shoeboxes!!!!!  We will be packing the shoeboxes in the Media Center on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Please find it in your heart to support such a worthy cause.

Starting November 14th  the JROTC will begin the journey of supporting the Marine Corps "Toys for Tots."   All clubs, classrooms and organizations within WCHS school are encouraged to participate. Please help WCHS with this very important cause.  The toy must be new and still in the package. There is no certain price the toy must be and it cannot be gift wrapped. Toys will be collected through December 2nd.  If you would like to help you can drop toys off in the JROTC Classroom (A803) at anytime.

If your child needs an early release, the simplest and most efficient way to accomplish that is to send a note with your child that morning.  Your child should take the note to their student services* as soon as they arrive in the morning before 1st period.  A pass will be prepared and given to them at that time.  When it is time for them to leave, they should show their teacher the early release pass and they are free to leave and meet you.  If it's an unexpected situation and you are unable to send a note in the morning, please call with as much notice as possible.  Please keep in mind that when you call, we will need to look up your child's schedule, write the pass and have it sent to your student which could take some time.  Thank you so much for your assistance.

As a review of the GK-12 program, Warren teachers will be paired with a research graduate student (M.S. or Ph.D.) from the IUPUI School of Medicine or School of Science.  This GK-12 fellow will dedicate 15 hours per week in the classroom with Warren teachers to bring the excitement of research into the science classroom.  GK-12 teams will develop age-appropriate, hands-on classroom activities that are broadly related to the fellow's own area of graduate research, are related to the instructional goals of the teacher partner, and are linked to the Indiana Academic Standards.  GK-12 Fellows benefit by improving their leadership., communication, and teaching skills, and become more aware of the need for high-quality science education at all levels, and Warren teachers and students will benefit as well by incorporating additional research and data collection in the classroom.  Several of the teacher partners have published articles in Science Scope or other related journals, and most have given presentations or posters of their work at the national GK-12 conference or HASTI.

The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school.  This might include your child's photo, your child's name, or your child's work in some of the district publications, newsletters, school district website, or in staff training videos.  We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television and radio) about your child's achievements.  We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes.  However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify your child's school office in writing that you do not want this type of information released.

In response to our need to increase student achievement, the student and staff school day for the 2011-2012 school year at WCHS/WCC will be from 7:20 am until 2:50 pm.

Additional details, including the bell schedule which will include an extended period 3, will be shared with students and staff on the first day of school.  This extended 3rd period will allow for writing and reading across the curriculum, as well as additional English 10 and Algebra support for students as they prepare for the ECA, and ACT/SAT supports for students how have already exceeded mastery of these skills.

We look forward to the opportunities to help students succeed!
