Warren Central High School Selected for The Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Posted by

The Warren Central High School Theatre Department, under the direction of Jeffrey Dalstrom and Susan Kalberer, has been selected to perform in The Edinburgh Fringe Festival—the largest and most prestigious arts festival in the world, as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF) held in the summer of 2017.

Each August, Edinburgh, Scotland becomes one of the most magical and exciting places on earth as performing artists from all over the world come to Scotland to take part in the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The whole city becomes a stage and visitors can view performances at playgrounds, conference rooms, city parks and churches – virtually any site that can accommodate a group. The Fringe Festival includes over 3,500 different performances of music, theater, dance, and comedy during its nearly two month run. Warren Central High School’s production of No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre will be showcased at the AHSTF venue in the heart of downtown Edinburgh.

Warren Central High School, long recognized for its entertaining, innovative, and award-winning productions, was selected by the AHSTF Board of Advisors to represent the United States and Canada as part of the 2017 AHSTF program. The Board reviews all completed applications and identifies the top performing arts high schools in the United States and Canada based on their most recent bodies of work, awards, community involvement, philosophies, and recommendations by their Board of Directors—which includes top-notch university professors from Southern Methodist University, Ball State University, the University of Cincinnati, and John Abbot College in Quebec, Canada.

More than 2500 high school theatre programs were nominated this year representing all 50 states and nearly every province of Canada. Warren Central’s Theatre Department was nominated by the board at AHSTF for their continued excellence in high school theatre.  Once nominated, the school's director completes several short essays and submits other evidence of achievements. Only forty schools were selected this year to attend the 2017 Fringe Festival in Scotland.

Two weeks ago during the telecast of a San Francisco Giants game, the commentator shared a list of Right fielder Hunter Pence’s favorite books.  Among the authors listed was Napoleon Hill who served as an advisor to two presidents, FDR and Woodrow Wilson.  With regards to work ethic, Hill once said, “Some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard at it.”  Given this week’s theme, we are not going to just talk about working hard- we are actually going to do it.  While many teams around the state will begin to coast in May, we are going to turn up and challenge the team.  As your boys come home a little more taxed than usual this week, remind them of the long-term benefits of having the habit of hard-work.  We want to produce men that are solution-oriented and take responsibility for their own growth.  A key ingredient in success is having the mindset that they will not give up in the face of challenges.

This is an exciting theme for our coaching staff because it is nothing new for our boys, and it is old hat for our families.  I am always hearing stories about Warren families that have a true ‘grind’ about themselves.  Whenever a person is feeling ‘stuck’ in life, hard work is often a key ingredient in waking them up from their slumber.  Our staff and players would be instructed and inspired by hearing your story.  If you would, send us your story of hard work to dseibel@warren.k12.in.us.  How has a strong work ethic helped your family?

Expectations for Returning Players

1. Play summer baseball.  We will have a game and a practice per week in the month of June.

2. Participate in summer weights

3. Enroll in Athletic Weights during 2016-2017 school year

4. Attend the banquet in formal attire (all players)

5. Turn in their Springer homework
